An absolutely beautiful spot in Antigua is Shirley Heights. It is located on the southernmost tip of the island. It was originally home to a military complex housing a guard house, officer's quarters, hospital, magazine and cemetery among other buildings. An obelisk in the cemetery commemorates the officers and men of the 54th Regiment (2nd Battalion Dorsets) who died in service in the West Indies between 1840 and 1851. The Heights are nearly 500 feet above sea level and offer spectacular views of English Harbour below. Behind the catchment on the highest ground was the Signal Station from which a system of flags was used by day and guns by night to convey messages to the city of St, John's
