The Hermitage, Tennessee

The Hermitage
Tennessee

The Hermitage is a historical plantation and museum located near Nashville. The plantation was owned by Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the U.S. from 1804 until his death at the Hermitage in 1845. Jackson only lived at the property occasionally until he retired from public life in 1837.  Enslaved at the plantation were ten and women at the time of the its purchase in 1804.  By the time of Jackson’s death in 1845 110 slaves worked at the Hermitage, principally involved in the growing of cotton, its major cash crop.

Over the years I’ve visited four presidential estates and I rate this fourth on my list (likely because I visited in in March when the grass was dormant and the flowers not in bloom).
