It was June 1992. I was in Ireland on a 2 1/2 week vacation which in addition to golf would take me to museums and castles both here and in Northern Ireland. I left the B&B we were staying at and headed north to the Ballybunion Golf Club. Fortunately I ran into a very young man who was hitchhiking. As luck would have it he was also heading to Ballybunion as he worked there as a caddie. That was fortunate because I would have likely gotten lost enroute. I ended up arriving about a half hour before the first scheduled tee time. Because their new clubhouse was under construction I had to check in at a trailer. Being just a single they sent me off first without a caddie. What I vividly remember while on the first tee was a large cemetery just off to my right and a spectacular large sand dune just off to my left. Luckily I hit the tee shot straight. Every hole seemed more beautiful than the previous one. Since I was alone I decided to play two balls all the way around starting at the second tee. My Titleist beat my Spaulding balls by two strokes. The course turned out to be the most beautiful I had ever played - and it still is.
