The year was 1971. My wife and I headed north, entered Canada, then drove westward. We re-enterd the U.S. in Michigan then went westward again to Lake Geneva Wisconsin. I couldn't wait to get there as I had booked a one week stay at what was then known as the Playboy Club. At the time one of the most well known courses in the USA was the Brute at the Playboy Club. Also popular was their other 18 hole layout named The Highlands. What remains vivid in my memory was going to the first tee on the Brute Course. I got paired up with a threesome of guys who were regular players there. One inquired about my handicap. I told him I was a 21 handicapper. His reply was "Well, you won't break 125 on this course. So what did I shoot? I went 68 on the front nine then ripped through the back nine in a splendid 67 for a final score of 125. My new friend was right on the money with his prediction. The Highlands Course, by the way, was much easier. My final score for that 18 was 111. On yes - I did eventually (many years actually) lower my handicap to a reasonable 13.
