The Cows of West Hartford

The Cows of West Hartford

In 2007 the town of West Hartford, Connecticut held what they called the Cow Parade.  Fifty artists from around the state painted life size cows which were then placed around downtown areas of West Hartford.  The event was a major success drawing thousands upon thousands of people top see the spectacle.  Take a look below.

Hartford Golf Club, Connecticut - Round 2

Hartford Golf Club - Round #2
West Hartford, Connecticut

The Hartford Golf Club is one the most prestigious golf clubs in the area.  It features twenty-seven spectacular golf holes and was host to the USGA's Mid-Amateur Championship a few years ago.  The course was designed by two of America's most noted golf course architects, Donald Ross and Devereaux Emmett.  I had the extreme pleasure of first playing the course in 1996 and then again in 1997.  Each time I played the first eighteen of their twenty-seven holes.  Below are a few photographs from my second round.  They are followed by an Internet link where you can see where I and my playing partners traversed that day.

The Internet link to view my round at the Hartford Golf Club is just below.

Elizabeth Park

Elizabeth Park

The area which is now known as Elizabeth Park was once owned by Charles M. Pond.  Mr. Pond was a wealthy industrialist and statesman whose career included being a Director of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, Hartford Hospital, and the Phoenix Fire Insurance Company. Mr. Pond was also President of the Hartford Trust Company and he was Treasurer of the State of Connecticut.
When Mr. Pond passed away, he willed his estate to the City of Hartford with the stipulations that it be used as a horticultural park and that it be named for his wife, Elizabeth, who had died a few years earlier.

The City hired Theodore Wirth as its first park superintendent to design the garden areas.  Mr. Wirth's first project was to create a rose garden because, in his words, "it would please the people."  This first planting grew from 100 bushes to the two and a half acre garden of some 15,000 bushes that is the center piece of Elizabeth Park and is known throughout the world.

Today the park encompasses 102 acres and boasts many garden areas, pathways, greenhouses, lawns, a picnic grove, a pond and recreation areas.

It's interesting to note that although the park is physically located in the town of West Hartford it does belong to the City of Hartford.

A few photos are shown below.  Then you'll find my Internet link to view seventy-five photographs of the park.

Christmas at the Governors Residence

Christmas at the Governors Residence

During the Christmas season in 2009 then Connecticut State Governor Jodi Rell held an open house at the Governors Mansion.  It was to allow the public to view the estate's Christmas decor.   I was fortunate enough to be able to attend.  Surprisingly, at least to me, the Governor was there to meet with the attendees and mingle with the guests.  Several photos are shown below, followed by an Internet link to view the mansion in more detail.

Hartford Golf Club, Holes 10 - 19

Hartford Golf Club
West Hartford Connecticut

The Hartford Golf Club is one of the premier courses in the state of Connecticut.  It was founded in 1896 and its twenty-seven holes are a combination of Donald Ross and Devereaux Emmett's architectural skills. I've had the pleasure of playing holes 1 through 18 on a half dozen occasions but have only been able to play holes 19 - 27 once.
